Harsco is a professional scaffold builder for all kinds of major maintenance and revamp activities. For a new scaffolding, Safety is priority number 1. A new design must:

• offer a stable and safe construction
• properly enclose the process installation
• can be built and dismantled efficiently

This requires careful preparation. Originally, complex installations were mapped with a number of old drawings (often 2D and not “up to date”), additional recent photos and a large amount of manual measurements. Despite all this effort, there are still surprises in the construction of the scaffolding. In practice, support points turn out to be different in shape and location than expected based on drawings. This means that due to safety the calculations have to be made again and the construction is stopped until the calculations have been approved. It may be clear that this increases costs and, perhaps more importantly, disrupts building planning.

3D laser scanning and subsequent modeling offers a major step forward in the execution of these projects. With the 3D laser, complete installations can be mapped with high accuracy in 1 day. Without great risk for the operators and engineers, even hard-to-reach places, the installation parts are mapped in a central coordinate system. The point cloud results look like good photos (nowadays even in color) and contain directly measurable information. Scan models (point clouds) serve as the basis for a 3D-CAD model or are used as a base for the redesign. This saves time and costs when measuring, but more importantly it increases safety by preventing misfits in the design and construction process.

It will be clear that the scanned information is also of great value for the other parties involved in installation design, engineering, work preparation, construction and maintenance. 1 data model for asset management during the entire lifecycle of the installation naturally reduces costs.
